Textual Analysis- The Pretender (Foo Fighters)

Artists: Foo Fighters

Genre: Hard Rock/ Post Grunge

Who Directed/ Produced it?: Gil Norton

When was it Created: August 21st 2007

Record Label: Roswell/RCA

Mise En Scene
The setting looks to be in a large building, such as a warehouse, or a studio. This can be told by the large space that the band are playing. Also the building is very well lite, meaning that all the lights have to be on the ceiling, another characteristic of a warehouse or studio. Also there is a shine on the floor that shows that all of the lights are on the ceiling. It could also be a hanger as the roof seem to curl down at the edges, which is a characteristic of a hanger.

This is a screenshot of the roof of the scene, as you can see the roof is in a semi-circle shape, this is a characteristic of a hanger, this would explain the large empty space, and the very well lit room.

Costumes and Makeup
All of the band members look to be wearing all casual clothes, such as shirts and jeans, this makes it look like a less formal video, and that the band wishes to play comfortably and look fashionable as well. Also if all the band members were wearing black suits then their clothes would be very formal but very plain and boring, which would cause the video to be plain and boring. Also the members of the band excluding the lead singer are wearing black clothes, so that they stand out with the red wall behind them, also the Lead singer looks to be the only person that is wearing white, this goes with the story in the song, that he is not going to stand in the crowd anymore. Also the SWAT teams that are seen in the clip,  they are dressed like that, to show that they are the authorities to stop them from standing out of the crowd and rebelling.

Props
There are quite a few props that can be seen, the first noticed is the bands instruments and speakers, also the lead singers microphone, this shows that the band are actually playing their music. Other props that are seen are the Batons and riot shields that the SWAT are holding, this makes them look more genuine and authentic, it also adds the feeling that the band are going to get beaten and lose.

This is a screenshot of the band with the their instruments, it also shows the speakers that the band members are using. The screenshot also shows some other equipment of to the sides of the shot, this could also show that the setting is a warehouse where equipment has been stored.

Lighting
The lights that are used in the authentic, as they were all ready there when the band arrived. These lights are used to make the setting brighter and clearer, also so that the audience can see the band, and can see more of the setting, such as the area where the SWAT teams enter.

This screenshot shows all of the lights that can be seen in the scene, this also shows that all of the lights are not artificial, as all the lights were there before the video was set up for shooting, plus all of these lights on the ceiling keep the whole scene lit up very well and make everything in the scene very easy to see and clear.

Colour Palette
The colour palette of this video is very bright and clear, but all that changes 3:28 where the wall/paint thing behind the band explodes, then the colour palette changes to a bright red colour, but the visibility is very low and difficult to see.

These screenshots show the difference in visibility between when the wall is there and behind the band, before the main drop in the song, and after the main drop in the song where the wall behind the band explodes blurring all the vision, but allowing the viewer to only just about see what is happening.

Camera Techniques
There are a lot of camera techniques that are used in this video, they are:
Long shots- this allows the audience to see all of the setting and more of what is happening in the setting.
Worms eye view- This makes the singer look larger and more powerful that he is.
Close ups- there are a lot of close ups in the video, mostly of the lead singers face, but also there is on of the lead singers hand as he applies a bandage, this allows the audience to see what the lead singer is doing
Zooms- There is a zoom of the side of the lead singers face, this adds some effect to the video, and also allows the audience to see more of the lead singer.
Low Track shot- This happens close to the beginning of the video, it moves very quickly towards the lead singer and a almost floor level angle. This adds the effect that something is approaching the lead singer.
Tilt- When the camera is facing the lead singer, the camera all of a sudden turn and face the ceiling, or something different entirely, it looks like the camera got knocked out of shot.
Pans- There is a pan behind the lead singer, this allows the audience to see what is in front of the lead singer.
All of these camera techniques happen at a high speed, this has been done so that it adds excitement, because the camera is moving fast the same as the music is playing fast.

Editing techniques
There is only a few editing techniques found in this clips. They are cuts, they are lots of fast cuts in the clip, this is to add intensity to the video, and is also done because the music is playing fast, the music video would not be very good if the video was very slow but the music was played at a high speed. The other editing techniques that is in the video is Slow motion. The music slows down when the SWAT teams charge towards the band, so slow motion is moved to make the SWAT teams move very slowing like the music, this makes the music video very consistent.

Target Audience
The target audience of this video, are people that listen to the Hard Rock/ Post Grunge genre of music, or people that like listening to Foo Fighters, also its for those that like angry songs such as this one. The age range of this music is people between the ages of 14-19 as that is the rebellious age in someones life.

Textual Analysis- Paranoid (Black Sabbath)

Artist: Black Sabbath

Genre: Heavy Metal/ ProtoPunk

Who Directed/Produced it?: Rodger Bain

When it was created: August 1970

Record label: Vertigo

Mise En Scene
The setting of the clip looks to be set in the middle of a large building. The scene is very difficult to pick out as, no audience is seen in the video and also that large wall behind the band is very confusing. But in the corner of some of the shots, a curtain can be seen and a light on a stand can be seen, showing that they have chose this area for their music video.

Costumes and Makeup
The band look to be wearing everyday clothes of the 1970's, such as wooly jumpers, plain shirts and trousers, this shows that they don't care what they look like, they just want to be comfortable whilst they are playing. But ironically the lead guitarist has a cross on a necklace, which is odd because most people think Heavy metal is about death and satan and killing each other, but the guitarist is wearing a christian cross.

Props
There are only a few props visible, there is only the bands instruments, that make them look like they are playing the song, and also that giant wall in the background that spins, that is there to make the scene more full instead of having the band playing in a empty room, they are playing with a mysterious wall in the background, and its also there to attract the audiences attention. Plus a curtain and a light that can be seen in some shots, but I don't think they are supposed to be in shot.

Lighting
All the lights in this video are artificial in this clip, they have used these lights to make it brighter and easier to see everything in the setting such as the band members and their instruments. They have also use lights to make the areas beside the wall to change from dark to light very quickly.

Colour Palette
As the video is from the 1970s and colour television was still in the making back then, the video's colour palette is black and white, but this is good as it goes with the old song that is being played, and if any viewer was alive in the 1970's, then it would bring them a lot of happy memories.

Camera Techniques
There is quite a few different camera techniques. There are close-ups which allow the audience to see that person's facial expression or get a closer look at what is in the shot such as the guitarist's guitar. There are zooms, mostly zoom outs, this allows the audience to gradually see more of what they were focused on, for example when it slowly zooms out, it eventually shows that the person they were focused on was the guitarist, as he is holding a guitar. Also there are pans which allow the audience to see the whole setting but on some occasions see to much of the setting. There are groups shots as well that allows the audience to see all of the band in one shot, so that they can see the guitarist, the bassist, the drummer and the singer all in one shot, this helps the audience to remember what the band looks like.

Editing Techniques
Because the video is from 1970 there is not many editing techniques, as you would get in a newer more up to date music video. There is only cuts through out the whole of the video, there is no other editing technique found in the video, but there is 32 cuts throughout the whole video.

Target Audience
The target audience are those that like heavy metal music, or like to listen to the Black Sabbath band. The age of the target audience is more for the older people such as 50, 60s and up, as they are the ones that stick to the music they heard as a child. The gender of the target audience is mostly males, as they are more into guitars and head banging music such as this.

Textual Analysis- Viking Death March (Billy Talent)

Artists: Billy Talent

Genre:  Punk Rock/ Post Hardcore

Who Directed/Published it?: Billy Talent

When was it created?: May 25th 2012

Mise En Scene
The whole of the clip looks to be set in 4 locations all around the same area, the 1st is in the audience, where the camera man gets shots of the audience and shots of the band for the audience's perspective. The 2nd location is on the stage with the band, looking down on the audience, and looking at the band with their instruments, this makes the viewer feel like they are on the stage with the band. the 3rd location is back stage, there is only 2 shots from back stage and both of them are the lead singer walking on to the stage. The final location looks to be from a helicopter, where the cameraman gets shots of the band and the audience from above, so that the viewer can see all of the gig at once.

These screenshots show all four different locations of where the band are shot from, the first is in the helicopter above the whole stage where all can be seen, the second is from the crowd, so the band can be seen for a audience kind of view, the third is from backstage, so that the viewer feels like they are there with the band watching them play from behind and the forth is from the band's point of view which is on the stage itself.

Costume and Make up
The band look like they are not wearing any makeup, but the costumes that the band looks to be normal, everyday clothes, all of the band are wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and trainers, this shows that they want to feel comfortable whilst playing their music, the audience also seem to be wearing normal clothing, this shows that it is not a special occasion for the audience, they just came as it is fun, not that it is of importance.

Props
In this video they used a lot of props, such as speakers and banners, microphones near the drum kit were used, to make sure the drummer was heard. They also used lights so that the band could be seen by the audience, also boxes that the equipment came in is on the stage to, these are usually there for the band to kick as they get very excited when on the stage. Also the bands instruments are seen, as the video wouldn't be very good if the band were just standing there. All of these props add a concert/gig feeling to the video, so that the viewer feels like they are there watching the band.

Lighting
The lights that are in the video are artificial, as they were set up with the setting so that the audience could see the band, whilst they are playing. Also the lights that shine on to the audience are very fast paced lights, meaning that they come on and go off very quickly, this causes the audience to get more excited and also adds effect to the video.

This screenshot shows all of the lights that are behind the band and make the band visible to the viewer and to the audience in the video, also in the screenshot below the first you can see the colour changes from normal lighting to a red and orange lighting filter, to attract attention and to make the scene more entertaining and lively.

Colour palette
The colour palette is a mix between dark colours such as black, because this is the colour that most people associate with the music genre, as it is a very angry music type, light colours such as bright white, these colours add transitions to the video and make the video more dramatic. Other colours are used such as red and orange, these are very obvious colours, meaning they stand out the most in the video and they also add some colour to the video.

Camera techniques
There is a variety of camera angles in this video, for example there are pans, close ups of instruments and microphone, long shots of the stage, zooming in on the band members, a few birds eye view shots, lots of slow motion are in the video. The pans allow the viewer to see all of the setting, and allowing them to get a feel for the setting. The close up of the instruments add effect to the video and make the video more lively, instead just a shot of the guitarist strumming from a normal distance, there is a close up allowing the audience to see more of his instrument than if they were in the audience. The longshots also allow the audience to see more of the stage, instead of them facing the audience, they get to see more of the stage and how the stage was laid out. The zooms make the viewer feel like they are getting closer to the band member and adds effect to the music video, because usually when you zoom in on something it is of some importance and it adds effect. The birds eye view adds a sense also allows the audience to see more of both the stage and the audience, they can see what banners are up, where each band member is stood. finally the slow motion makes it more memorable and dramatic, as if something is in slow motion is looks amazing, for example, when the drummer was in slow motion it looked amazing, then it sped up so that the drummer could hit the snare at the right beat.

Editing Techniques
There is a couple of editing techniques found in the video, for example there are a lot of cuts in this video, by 30 seconds in the video there had been at least 25 cuts, this is done to keep up with the fast paced music that is playing. There is also filters that are over some shots, these filters are also very fast moving, and this is done because the music is very fast paced, meaning that the filters would be fast paced for the video and the music to be consistent. The music video would not be very good if the music was very fast and the video was of corn swaying in a field. There are a couple of fades that can be seen in the beginning of the video, this is done so that it pulls the audiences focus away from the item closest to the camera. Finally there is also screen filters, these make all of the images on the screen a certain colour, or they can make everything have that a tint of that colour, this has been done to add a bright colour to the whole scene.

Target Audience
The target audience of this video would be people that like the Punk Rock/ Post Hardcore genre of music. The age range of the target audience of the video would be people that are between the age of 15-20, these tend to be the people that like the Post Hardcore/Punk Rock genre. The gender of the target audience could be male or female, as this is not a gender specific music genre.

Music Video

This is our music video over the track 'Mr Bright Side', we used cart and track to get the pan in the video. We also used artificial lights, to light up the vocalist, as if we hadn't then he would not be seen. We also used End Burns to add a effect to the music video, and also to add a bit of character to the video aswell. We put in see transparent objects in the video to give the setting a bit of bar kind of feel, and to also add character to the video. Over cranking was also used, this adds a slow motion effect to the video and makes the vocalist look like he is moving slower but his lips are in sync with the track.

Textual Analysis- Even Flow (Pearl Jam)

Artist: Pearl Jam

Genre: American Rock

Who Directed/Produced it?: Rick Parashar

When was it created?: April 6th 1992

Record Company: Epic

Mise En Scene
The video looks to be set at a rock concert where Pearl Jam were playing, this is noticed as the band are playing on a stage, and there is a audience standing in front of them, apart from having the shot from the stage the camera man also gets shots from the audiences perspective.

In this screenshot you can see the scene of where the band are performing, and what the whole stage looks like. As this song is rather old the band probably didn't have enough money and time to make their own separate music video so they just hired a camera crew to film their performance and made that a music video, quite a lot of bands back in this era did that.

Costumes and Makeup
The costumes of the band (Pearl Jam) looks to be wearing everyday clothes, such as jeans and a shirt, this shows that they are being informal, and do not think of this as an important meeting or occasion, they just want to play their music, but be comfortable and fashionable whilst playing. The audience also look to be wearing everyday clothes, so they are also wearing t-shirt, vests, shirts and jeans. This tells the audience that they came for fun and personal entertainment, and are not at a meeting or job interview.

Props
The props that can be seen in this video are the bands instruments, this is so the band can play their music to the audience, plus the music video would not be very popular if the band were just standing there. Other props that can be seen are lights that allow the audience of the band, to see the band. Also if the lights the were not there then the audience would not be able to see the band, making the music video useless.

Lighting
The lighting in the video is genuine, meaning that the lights were set up with the setting, for example the lights that are used in the video are lights that were used at that gig/concert. The lights are focused on the band members, meaning if the band members moved around then the lights would follow them, so that the audience can still see them. The drummer on the other hand has lights coming from beneath him, so that he looks like a shadow playing the drums, this adds effect.

In this screenshot you can see all of the lights that is being used to keep the band visible to the viewer and the audience in the video, another light thats beam can be seen but that the actual light can't is a big powerful light that is above the audiences seats, this means that if the lead singer moves around then the light would follow them, so that they can still be seen.

Colour Palette
The colour palette of the music video is mainly dark, the light parts of the setting is the lights that are shining on the band members. This makes the band look like they are glowing. Also there is a red filter light in the background which adds colour to the setting, and makes the setting more exciting.

Camera Techniques
There is a variety of camera techniques used in the video. There are pans of the audience, this allows the viewer to see all of the audience and makes them feel like they are there looking at the audience. There are long shots of the band and a few of the audience, this shows the band from a distance, and from the top of where the audience are sitting, this make the viewer feel like they are there watching the band from the top seat, and also allows them to see more of what is going on, such as people jumping off the stage. There are medium shots from the back of the stage, so that the viewer can see what is going on from behind the stage, and it feels like they are looking through the eyes of one of the crew members. There are also mid shots of the vocalist singing, these shots only show the top half of the vocalist, this allows the audience to see a close up of the vocalist singing at full force, and means they can see the vocalist's expressions.

Editing Techniques
There are a few different editing techniques used in the video. There are lots of cuts in the video, in the first minute of the video there had been at least 30 cuts, this is because the song is relatively fast, so that the cuts have to keep up with the music, or else the music video would be wrong, and would not look right. There is also some slow motion in the slower parts of the song, this makes the slower parts of the song more intense and memorable than if it was just someone playing the guitar. There is a blue filter that is also seen in the video, this looks to be a transition from one clip to the next. This too adds colour to the video and makes the picture a little brighter.

Target Audience
The target audience of this video are people that like the American Rock genre of music or like listening to Pearl Jam. There is not age range for the target audience of this video as any age of people could listen to it, also the song was published in 1992, so it is also aimed at people like music from that year. The gender of music could be male or female, as the music genre is not gender specific.

Textual Analysis- Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Artist: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Genre: Southern Rock/ Hard Rock

Who Directed/Produced it?: Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington

When was it Created?: 30th April 1973

Record Company: Atlantic Records

Mise En Scene
The setting of this video looks to be set in desert area, this can be clarified by the cactus and the sandy ground. Also there are men in cowboy clothing in the video this shows that it is set in the USA and not in the UK, as most Cowboys are from the USA. The video looks to be set at late evening when the sun is setting to add that orangey background colour to the scene, in the midday when it is the brightest so that all of the props and the scene can be seen clearly, without the use of artificial lighting.

This screenshot shows you the setting that is in the video, this is one of many different shots of the same setting, most of these shots are of a desert sandy kind of setting, that looks to be in the USA.

Costumes and Make-up
The costumes that are seen throughout the whole of this video is the characters that are dressed in the cowboy outfits. They are dressed like this to get a message across that the video is shot in the USA, and that the past never dies for some people, and also the people that are dressed in hiking gear, this is to show that these characters have been hiking up and down the landscape of where this video has been shot.

Props
There are not that many props that can be seen in the video, the main one that can be noticed is the horses, as they add to the cowboy effect, also they make the scene a lot more dramatic if the character is riding a horse in slow motion, as it adds character and drama to the scene and the whole video. There are no other props seen in the video, this shows that they have just used the setting around them and what they had with them to make a music video.

Lighting
The lighting in this video is not artificial it is all from the setting, which in this case is the environment, for example the orangey background that is in some scene, is from the sun setting in the background and it forms the orange light that adds effect to the scene. Also some of the shots are in the middle of the day, so no artificial lighting is needed, they have just used the light that has been provided.

Colour Palette
The colour palette of this video changes from light to dark quite often, it changes from the brightness of the day, where all can be seen and is very clear and visible, to dark where only a few things can be seen and vision is at its lowest. This has been done to show days passing by, so that the audience feel like they are watching someones life right in front of them. Low shots are used, so that the viewer can only see the legs of the animal of character in the shot, this adds effect to the video and makes the scene more dramatic.

This is screenshot shows the setting when it is dark, where only a small amount can be seen as there little light behind the house in the shot, this means that the viewer can see that the house if there, but can't see what is on the house or what the house looks like, this adds effect to the video.

Camera Techniques
There is a wide variety of camera techniques used in this video, such as zooms, these are used to allow the audience to see more of whats in the shot, it also adds effects to the shot, long shots are also used, to allow the viewer to see more of the setting than what is in a medium shot, another technique used is the pan, this allows the viewer to follow a certain character in the shot as the camera turns as the character moves across the shot. Another technique that is used is extreme long shot, this allows the audience to see the setting and can describe the setting in a better detail as they can see farther that in a long shot. Worms eye view is also used, as it allows the viewer to see that setting from ground level. Close ups are used so that the viewer can see more of the object or person that is in front of them, and can judge them greater detail.

Editing Techniques
There are is only 2 types of editing techniques that I can see in this video, one is a transition that tell the viewer that the video is starting, and also to attract their attention to the video, the second is mainly cuts all the way through, and as mostly all of the shots in the video are of scenery then not of the cuts are linked together, so there are no jump cuts in the video.

Target Audience
The target audience of this video are those that like the Hard Rock/ Southern Rock genre of music, and those that have listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd before and like his music. It is also aimed at the older generation of people (from ages 40+) as they have grown up listening to this music and it will remind them of their childhood and maybe some memories.

Group Textual Analysis- Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons)

Artists: Mumford and Sons

Genre: Bluegrass/ Folk Rock

Who directed it?: Markus Drives

When it was Created?: 11th August 2009

Record Company: Platinum

The entire of the music video looks to be set in a warehouse kind of setting, or maybe a barn setting. Which they have decorated with light-bulbs on strings, this gives the feeling of a barn party like is seen in films, and this is the band playing. The lighting only allows the veiwers to see the band and leaves the audience dark, and can't be seen, this is the usual set up if there is a band on the stage. This is a very basic video as there is only cuts to the band and there are no jump cuts to something else that could be happening, like what is usually seen in other music videos. They are standing on the stage playing to the audience even though the veiwer can see that there is no audience, this adds enigma to the whole video.
